William Carleton epitomised the search by nineteenth century Irish writers for a national identity. He spoke in the voice of the Irish peasant and was heard all over the literary world. His books, from the early collection Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry () to the late novel Willy Reilly (), were tremendously popular.

Carleton, William, an author, distinguished for his just delineation of the character of the Irish peasantry, was born on Shrove Tuesday,at Prillisk, near Clogher, County of Tyrone. He was the youngest of fourteen children.

His father, a small farmer, was a man of considerable intelligence, endowed with a surprising memory; his mother used to sing the old Irish songs. William Carleton, (born Feb. 20,Prillisk, County Tyrone, Ire.—died Jan. 30,Dublin), prolific writer who realistically portrayed the life of the rural Irish.

Born the youngest of 14 children on a small farm, Carleton learned to appreciate the Irish heritage from his father, a man well-versed in the rich folklore of the area. Oh no.
